I was introduced to computers as a teenager, 25 years ago, in the form of a Motorola 6800 microprocessor which I programmed in machine code. My programming experience has included CAD/CAM systems, mapping applications (GIS), large scale database systems, and massively concurrent services.
When Nokia was investigating Java as a way to enable third party applications in phones, they recruited me. Nokia puts its heart behind industry co-operative standards, and I was glad to be central in their initial standardisation work with Java. I was reporting, as a Specialist, directly to Jyrki Yli-Nokari, Nokia's global strategist for Java.
Since leaving Nokia, I worked for Vodafone in the UK to help them with their platform strategy regarding Java, but I gained a lot of useful experience working for two games companies; and have been working recently mainly with C++ in large scale service applications.
